Just Because
Chris Haskett
So when I finally finished the "Partly Uncovered" album I realized that three of the tracks really just didn't fit with what was already a pretty eclectic record. They also didn't have ANYTHING to do with each other, which, perversely, gave them something in common. So I lumped them onto an EP by themselves. Why? Just because!
"ULZJ" is "unattributable Led Zeppelin jam" which is a rendering of a jam I found on a bootleg of jams from the Headley Grange sessions. I don't know which of them is/are the composer(s). My best guess is that John Paul Jones wanted to jam on a bit of P-Funk's "Cosmic Slop". Anyhow, I meshed it with a bridge/middle section I had knocking around and voila!
Dance of the Yama is, quite obviously, an hommage to John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Again, I had the riff knocking around and it wouldn't let me go. So here it is.
Finally, in the fever dreams of my psyche, it occurred to me that the Dead's "Bird Song" would have worked as a track on Miles' "Kind of Blue." (I've also had visions of various Van Halen tracks being played by the Basie or Ellington bands, but that's another matter for a different record...).
Anyway, so here's "Bird Song" loosely interpreted for 52nd At in 1959...
